Neighborhood Watch

There was a vehicle break-in last night at one of our neighbor's homes. Since this happened with the vehicle parked right in their driveway, and several people leave their vehicles parked outside, whether on the side of the road or in the driveway, we wanted to make sure you all knew about it and in turn would be vigil regarding your own property and careful in making sure your doors are locked and no valuables are left in the cars especially within view. Please be aware of anyone that you do not know wandering around the area as well.

Buying Furniture off the Back of a Truck
This past Sunday I heard a knock at the door and opened it to find a guy who gave me a quick pitch about how he was in town from North Carolina with a tractor trailer loaded with furniture that they were liquidating as part of the “summer markdown.” He went on to say that they were selling it for $0.30 on the dollar and invited me to see what they had in the truck. It turns out that they were going up and down the street trying to get people to come out to see their wares. We don’t need any furniture, and there’s no way I’m going to buy it off the back of a truck from a guy who cold called at my front door but, curious guy that I am, I went out to see what was up.
When I got out to the street, I noticed that the door of the truck said something about Thomasville Distributing Co. (or something like that) out of High Point, NC. While I’m familiar with the Thomasville brand of furniture, I somehow doubt that these guys were official representatives of Thomasville Furniture Industries, Inc. It seems more likely that they slapped some letters on a truck that made them sound official and then went out looking for some scammable souls.
Anyway, when I got to the truck, it was chock full of apparently new furniture, ranging from a grandfather clock to living room and bedroom sets. They had some slick brochures and official looking price lists, but it was unclear exactly what brand the furniture was. And what about those low, low bargain prices? Most of the full sets were ‘marked down’ down from ~$10k to ~$3k, which got me wondering… How often do these guys stumble upon someone that’s willing to shell out three grand for furniture off the back of a truck from a total stranger that happened to knock on their door on a Sunday afternoon? It must work at least occasionally, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing it. Beyond this, I’m really curious as to what the underlying scam is — again, I’m assuming here that people with legitimate truckloads of Thomasville furniture don’t make a living by pulling into subdivisions and trying to unload their wares in the middle of the street. I’ve Googled around a bit looking for an answer, but I haven’t run across anything related to this.
Was this really Thomasville furniture, or some sort of knockoff? Were the pieces factory seconds, or perhaps otherwise damaged? Or maybe they were stolen? Then again, maybe it’s perfectly normal for roving furniture salesman to go door-to-door trying to offload a truckload of home furnishings on a Sunday afternoon.

Beware of teens selling magazines!

In case anyone out there doesn't know this yet, do not buy magazines from the kids who come door-to-door selling subscriptions. They'll get into this whole very charming spiel about how they're earning "points" to buy books for college, and they're there to learn better communication skills and be inspired by people in the community.
But they're there to sell magazine subscriptions (that may or may not ever arrive) at inflated prices, NOT for any charity or college fund, but as a for-profit venture in an extremely seedy industry.You are not helping these "sweet" kids by buying into their lies.
You're perpetuating the problem. So don't feel at all guilty about saying no, closing the door, and calling the police to ask if the crew has a permit to solicit in the area.
The kids who just came to my door (all adorable wide-eyed smiles when trying to hook me, and abusive and cursing when I politely turned them down) were from American Community Services, Inc., but there are many such organizations that function like gangs and ensnare kids into a truly horrible lifestyle.Some links:

Flooding

During heavy rains, a lot of residents here in CC experience severe flooding issues. Look at these pictures of the last downpour as the water gathers at the bottom of Knob Hill Rd. It comes mainly from two directions- the top of Knob Hill and the top of Boyer. The Village of Clemmons has been out several times to evaluate the situation, but they have not arrived at a solution as of yet. We'll keep you posted as more news becomes available.

The first of hopefully many CC block parties was a great success. Many families came to meet and greet one another and enjoy food and beverages. We learned a lot about each other and made new friends!

CC Poll Questions

Every so often, we will ask a poll question to explore issues and to see how we as neighbors can make our neighborhood better. If anyone has any suggestions on poll topics, please email me at davidvogler7@aol.com

Our poll on how residents feel about paying for "decorative" lamp posts was a virtual tie, with 57% answering yes, they would be willing to pay an extra fee. We can have further discussions on this issue- so please feel free to comment on why you would or would not be willing to pay for the lights.

Holiday Trash and Recycling Collection Schedule
Trash and recycling that would normally be picked up on Friday, July 4th will be picked up Saturday, July 5th.
Also, due to the holiday, the dumpsters at Public Works for extra trash and recycling cardboard will not be available this Saturday, July 5th, but rather next Saturday July 12th between 8 a.m. and noon

Free mulch is available at the Public Works facility on Dillon Industrial Drive between 7 am and 7:30 am and between 3 pm and 3:30 pm. For more information call 766-9170

Debris and Weeds
Section 92 of the Clemmons Municipal Code governs the response to public nuisances identified as uncontrolled growth of weeds or accumulation of trash. The public policies stated therein outline proper investigation and abatement procedures. If you notice such conditions, especially those producing offensive odor or causing vermin, please contact the Village staff to file a complaint.A message from the Appearance Commission . . .

Whether deliberate or unintentional, littering is against the law. Littering is costly . . . to clean up, to economic development, to community appearance, and to you, if you get a ticket. Stop littering. Think before you throw that cigarette butt out the window or that candy wrapper on the ground. If you miss the trash can, take the time and pick up your trash. Keep our community clean and free of litter. Thank you.

Storm Water Run-off Issues

Some neighbors in and around our neighborhood have experienced flooding. From minor basment leaks to full costly flooding, there is a problem with stormwater run-off and no one seems to want to take responsibility. We have reached out to the developer, several builders and the Village of Clemmons. They all seem to know there is a problem, but no one will take steps to fix it. Basically, the new ordinance that was just passed to eliminate this problem applies to new developments, however- we are on the list of existing developments that will need attention. We just need to make sure that we are heard. If you have run-off problems, or even if you do not, it affects all of us in the long-run. Home property values are lowered due to the reputation of a neighborhood that floods when it rains, so we need to make our development a priority and get this corrected!

Street Light Update

Where are the street lights you ask? All the marketing materials for CC mentioned "new development with street lights" however to date there are obviously no lights installed.
After a number of calls attempting to find the responsible party, there apparently is a department within the Village of Clemmons office that should complete the installation. Through conversations with the office I have learned that department policy is to only install lights at official intersections. I have emailed Larry Kirby (contact at the Village of Clemmons office) requesting a meeting to further understand how many lights will be installed and the applicable locations.
